Be Mindful

There is no doubt about it — building a genuine mindfulness or meditation practice takes time, grit and the willingness to keep going even when it feels like nothing is happening.

Start with two minutes. Just two. Sit quietly, become aware of your breath, feel the weight of your body, notice the silence. That’s it. No drama, no mysticism. Just you and your breath.

Grow it gradually. Five minutes, then ten, then fifteen. Use it as your very own therapy for the everyday. The worries, the noise, the constant mental chatter — mindfulness gives you a way to step back from all of it and find some space inside yourself.

I had no idea when I first started that meditating would be such a powerful tool. I became calmer. More accepting. More able to meet life’s challenges without immediately being swept away by them. The return on the investment is real and it is enormous.

Go and learn it properly. There are brilliant courses out there — in person, online, for all levels. Learning to be calm and present is one of the most valuable things you will ever do for yourself.

And do you know what complements mindfulness beautifully? Journalling. After your practice, pick up your pen and write. Even just a few lines. How did you feel before you sat down? How do you feel now? Handwriting this reflection deepens the experience and builds your self-awareness over time. The two practices together — mindfulness and journalling — form the most powerful wellbeing partnership I know.
